Karl Lagerfeld, born in 1933, is an influential fashion designer of the late 20th century. He and his mother emigrated to Paris in 1953 and two years later, Lagerfeld became an apprentice at Pierre Balmain after winning a competition. Five years later, he moved to Jean Patou and designed two Haute Couture collections a year for the next five years.
